It was a reconstruction from 1940, but it sits on the original 18th century foundation and used to be an “ordinary” (similar to a coffee house today). It was called “Burdett’s Ordinary” in the 1700s. Some of our Founding Fathers visited this place, including; Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.
At 3am on Halloween night 2005, I was awoken to something strange. I had the feeling someone was watching me from near the foot of my bed. I looked and saw a man who stood over 6 feet tall and dressed in a dark brown period style suit, with graying hair. I looked closer and soon realized that this man looked exactly like George Washington! The next morning I got up and spoke to 2 friends of mine and told them what I had seen.
I then began to research this weird phenomenon and found some very interesting facts. Indeed, Mr. Washington hung out at this ordinary and that he was inaugurated in a suit which matched the description of the one I saw him wearing. I even found a portrait of President Washington in that same suit.
We often heard foot steps and the sound of furniture being moved and voices in the house. Everyone who ever came to visit me said they definitely felt something in the house.
Could it really have been George Washington? Or just the thought of living in the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg controlled my dreams and thoughts? Who knows, but I know what I saw and it all seemed very real, and I WAS awake!
