Bahamas Folklore & Legends

4/30/2015

The Bahamas are absolutely beautiful. Vacationing here was very exciting. The history, the culture, and of course the haunted locations were amazing. However, besides ghosts, the Bahamas also have a few myths and folklore.

Andros Bahamas is well known for its mythical loch ness monster type creature known as Lusca. It is said to live in the blue holes of the tropic waters and is described as part octopus/part shark or part octopus/part dragon. It is said to be the cause of drowning’s and sunken ships. It apparently uses its long tentacles to pull the victims down into the depths to their deaths.

Many believe the tidal currents are caused by Lusca’s breath. Skeptics say it is just a giant squid that people are reporting and not the creature they are describing and out of fear, the victims or witnesses imaginations run wild.

Another legend is of Pretty Molly. She is believed to be a beautiful seductive mermaid that swims in Pretty Molly Bay. Many locals have reported seeing her in the bay at night drawing people to the shores.

Others believe she is the ghost of a slave who committed suicide by walking into the water drowning herself. Either way, she has been reported by many for years.

Haunted Bahamas

Sailing the haunted Caribbean was a lot of fun and there is more than one location in the Bahamas that is reportedly haunted.

First is Fort Charlotte in Nassau, it was built in 1789 by Lord Dunmore, who I know a lot about from my time living in Colonial Williamsburg. He named the fort in honor of King George III’s wife. The fort never fired a shot but there seems to be residual energy surrounding it.

Another location is The Cloisters which is a 14th century ruins of a French Monastery. Many of the stones from the original structure were imported to the United States in the 1940’s. Many people here have seen shadows and apparitions around the ruins.

Queene’s Staircase is said to have activity as well. It was created by slaves between 1793 and 1794. They were carved from the solid limestone wall and were used as an escape route for the slaves from the neighboring Fort Fincastle.

Even if you don’t experience the paranormal while in the Bahamas the island is full of culture, mystery, and an amazing energy worth spending a few days here.

Traveling the Bermuda Triangle

Some blame the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle to left over technology from the lost city of Atlantis, other believe it’s a ghost, some say magnets under the oceans depths, then there is the believe in the kraken. We may never know the cause; maybe it is rogue waves, the Gulf Stream, strange weather occurrences, or even a UFO.

Devil’s Triangle is another name for this area. I have flown and sailed through this area numerous times and am still here, but there have been dozens upon dozens who have vanished mysteriously and never found.

This area is the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the world but isn’t even on the top ten list of most dangerous. It could just be the hype and people fearing the unknown.  The area is triangular shaped reaching from Miami peninsula to San Juan Puerto Rico to the mid Atlantic island of Bermuda.

Hopefully someday the cause for all the missing planes and ships will be found and the fear of the unknown will be no more.

Haunted Carnival Victory Cruise Ship

4/28/2015

Author Jamie Pearce, founder of Historic Haunts Investigations recently took a family vacation aboard the Carnival Cruise ship Victory.

This 893 foot long grand ship set sail into the Bermuda Triangle heading towards the Bahamas. This isn’t the ghostly tale that we want to tell though. This story is about the ship itself. A few years ago a young boy accidentally drowned in one of the pools aboard the ship and many say his spirit is still aboard.

Of course after hearing this story, Pearce and her family had to do a little exploring. They didn’t really sense anything out of the ordinary but with a passenger load of over 2,700, and over 1,000 crew; you can’t really conduct a proper investigation.

If Carnival ever wants to do so, Historic Haunts Investigations offers their services free of charge as always for an investigation.
