I’ve had a fascination with the supernatural –ghost stories and haunted houses and things like that—as long as I can remember, but much of it comes from my grandfather on my mother’ side. He was always telling us stories about the strange things he experienced in his life and that gave me an appreciation for the unexplained and mysterious around us.
As a writer, I realized I could capitalize on this interest in the paranormal when I purchased a reportedly haunted house in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1999. It was located in the midst of a beautiful Victorian neighborhood, and I realized there was a wealth of folklore and tradition that I could draw upon to write books that promoted interest in the area. That led me to write my first book, Ghosts of Old Louisville, in 2005.
2. What is the most exciting paranormal encounter that you have had?
I consider myself a cynic, and any time that the “paranormal” is involved, I always try to approach things from an objective, skeptical point of view—not just because I think it’s the rational thing to do, but also because it makes me more credible to readers when I write about would-be unexplained occurrences. Nonetheless, I’ve had several experiences during my lifetime that defied explanation. In the supposedly “haunted” house I purchased in Louisville, Kentucky, there were indeed a number of eerie events that I couldn’t explain away, such as inexplicable footsteps in the middle of the night and things moving of their own accord. Not only that, I once attended a séance-type of event in an old mansion where the participants used a large ostrich plume in a crystal vase to “communicate” with an unseen entity and the strange things that happened during that gathering has stuck with me to this day. That story appeared in Phantoms of Old Louisville, which came out in 2006.
3. What is the worst experience?
I have had a number of bad experiences concerning the “paranormal” and most of them involve purported psychics. More often than not, the “psychics” I encounter on investigations are nothing more than charlatans.
4. How many books have you written on the topic and where is the best place for readers to purchase them?
I have written a total of twelve books to date, and four of them deal with ghosts and the paranormal. The most recent is a book titled True Ghost Stories and Eerie Legends from America’s Most Haunted Neighborhood. You can find it at book stores and gift shops throughout Kentucky and in selected outlets across the country. Easiest, perhaps, is to look for it on amazon. com or barnesandnoble.com.
I have a number of projects in the works, and one of them is a true-crime book that deals with a bizarre murder that took place in an Old Louisville mansion several years ago. There’s a sledgehammer, a body in the basement, a strange love triangle – and more, including kinky sex, illicit drugs, counterfeit money, female impersonators, and a spooky old house that used to be a sanatorium. I’ve received tons of press about it, and you couldn't make this stuff up. They’ve interview me about it on A&E’s After the First 48, Investigation Discovery’s Deadly Sins, and Investigation Discovery’s Hell House.
