In the late 1800's, disease ripped through the Sanford area and wiped out at least one entire family. The family of five had little money and were buried in simple graves in a field with wooden markers. Everyone knows that you always respect a grace no matter how simple or elaborate it is. Well, almost everyone.
Through the years anyone who disrespected the graves suffered dearly, a few even by death.
The man who owned the property sold it to the state for the I4 development project and told them they must respect the graves, needless to say, that didn't happen and I-4 was built. It was built directly over the tiny family plot.
